National Health Insurance (NHI)
Foreign nationals holding a residence permit and residing in Taiwan continuously for six months are required by law to enroll in the National Health Insurance (hereinafter referred to as NHI).
Process for Enrolling in National Health Insurance
Assistance with enrollment is provided by the Human Resources Department of our university.
Calculation of the NHI Enrollment Date
For those entering Taiwan with a Resident Visa, the date of entry is considered the start of the residency period. For those holding a Visitor Visa or Entry Permit, the date of issuance of the residence permit is considered the start of the residency period.
- If the person does not leave Taiwan after entry: Residency start date + 6 months.
- If the person leaves Taiwan once for fewer than 30 days: Residency start date + 6 months + number of days abroad.
- If the person leaves Taiwan once for more than 30 days: The residency start date will be recalculated, with the most recent entry date considered the new residency start date, and the calculation will follow the rules mentioned in (1) and (2).
- For multiple entries and exits: The residency start date will be recalculated, taking the most recent entry date as the start of the residency period, then adding 6 months plus the number of days spent abroad.
The NHI premiums and coverage mentioned above are subject to the latest announcements on the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) website.
